Honouring the past, gently stepping forward.

In my last blog, Entering a New Year While Carrying the Past,” I reflected on how grief can quietly resurface as we step into a new year. Even amidst familiar traditions and expectations, we may still be carrying the unspoken hurts and emotions that have remained hidden, which can cause anxiety to rise.

Therefore, this week I’d like to give you a little reminder this week. Entering a new year doesn’t mean leaving the past behind. Take a moment to notice what you carry, honour it, and gently imagine how you want to move forward.

Honouring the past while gently stepping forward

  1. Pause and Breathe – Take 3 slow breaths, noticing where your body feels tension, heaviness, or ease. Hold you hand on these places and slowly breathe into it.

  2. Reflect on the Past Year – Draw a simple timeline of the past year. Mark moments that brought joy, challenge, or learning. Add one word or feeling for each significant moment.

  3. Notice What You Carry – Place a hand on your heart or abdomen. Ask yourself: “What am I still carrying, and how does it feel in my body?” Don’t try to change it — just notice.

  4. Set a Gentle Intention – Imagine holding that past gently as you step into the new year. Write or whisper a small intention that feels realistic and nurturing, e.g., “I will notice moments of safety,” or “I will allow myself to rest when needed.

“In the soft light of quiet moments, we find the strength to move forward. Remember, you are never alone in your journey.”
