About creative counselling

Creative therapy in both counselling and psychotherapy can be a great attribute.

Creativity has always been part of our human existence, both throughout the history of our evolution as well as the history of mental health care. Creativity is a desire to communicate and it can bridge the gap when there are no words. Where the talking therapy of counselling and psychotherapy can be supported by the use of images, imagary, movement and sound to unlock deeper levels of our being.

__________

Creative therapy for understanding.

I believe, as a visual person, that images can provoke emotions that have always been within us, but we are not yet ready to talk about. It can be a gentle way of looking at something without having to talk about it, until you are ready.

__________

Creative therapy in many forms.

Creativity can take many forms. You do not need to be good at drawing or painting or anything. All you need is a willingness to approach the creativity in your own way. This could be through the use of photographs, doodling, using pictures and words, through textures, poetry and many other ways. We are looking at ways to express ourselves besides talking.

__________

Creative therapy and our brain.

The talking therapy in conjunction with creativity in any form are complementary to each other as it will access both sides of our brain. Creativity allows for greater autonomy, self regulation and a more ‘possibility’ thinking, which can all lead to greater wellbeing.

Creative therapy with counsellor Eefje can involve writing in a journal like she is doing here leaning against breakers on the beach.
Creative therapy can be about exploring like the counsellor is showing how to use pastels, movement and colour to explore emotions.
Creative therapy can be making a journal with different pictures, colours and text to explore the inner world.

Writing, creative journalling, exploring with colour and movement are all complementary ways alongside therapy to explore emotions in a different way.
